Welcome to Latta Junior High & High School

From the desk of Terry Painter, Middle School Principal

Dear Latta Families,

Each August is filled with eager anticipation for the upcoming school year. This year is no different! Our teachers and staff have been working diligently to ensure that we are prepared to make this 2019-2020 school year a positive experience.  With that goal in mind, please know that you too play a vital role in the success of our Latta community.  We recognize that role, and we believe that together we can achieve excellence by honoring our district's Core Values of Integrity, Honor, Dependability, Commitment, and Accountability. The upcoming school year, we look forward to what the future holds. Whether it be in academic, arts, athletics, or other activities, our student's success is a joint effort. Together we will take the next step toward realizing our highest potential. Go Panthers!

From the desk of Stan Cochran, High School Principal

I always like the fresh start of a new year in school.  Students, as well as teachers and staff, have been able to get away from school for a short time and rest, play, work, travel, or whatever may be their summer routine.  By August and September, most are ready to get back into the structure of school and work hard to reach goals and achieve success.  Sometimes that routine involves a touch of change, whether it is transitioning to high school, beginning college courses concurrently, or taking on a new challenge as a student leader on campus.

Change can also introduce us to new faces in a new school year.  This year, we have several NEW STARS to welcome to LHS.  This includes students who have joined us from states that include Texas, Indiana, and Arkansas, as well as from in-state schools including Byng, Vanoss, Ada, Noble, Southmoore, and Minco.  We are excited to welcome each of these new Panthers into the LHS family.

In addition to our fantastic new students, we have a number of new teachers and staff members who have already proven themselves as an important and integral part of the mission and success of LHS.

  • Lisa Sawyers comes from Wewoka HS, where she taught the past eleven years after teaching at Maud HS for seventeen years.  A Byng graduate, Mrs. Sawyers is teaching business and computer application classes and she is also serving as a senior class sponsor.

  • Kevin Jumper is a Stonewall native who taught 27 years at El Reno High School.  Mr. Jumper teaches JH science and he is also one of our extremely vital bus drivers!

  • Our new HealthCore Coordinator is Carissa Vaughn.  Mrs. Vaughn and her husband have recently moved into the Ada area from Arkansas, where she graduated high school and college.  While completing her degree in Health Sciences, Mrs. Vaughn played 4 years of collegiate golf at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas.  She is coordinating the HealthCore program and teaching 3 middle school health classes.
  • Karen Smith is our new Director of Special Services.  Mrs. Smith has worked several years in northeast Texas as an elementary teacher, school psychometrist, and special education director.  After recently moving to Ada with her husband, who pastors Ada Church of the Nazarene, Mrs. Smith taught special education at Ada Schools before coming to Latta.
  • We are also excited to welcome Troy Byrd to Latta as another important (!) bus driver and vehicle fleet mechanic.  Mr. Byrd assists Mr. Duncan with our buses and vehicles and he is also the husband of Mrs. Tammy Byrd and father of LHS junior Caitlyn Byrd.
  • Our new Food Service Director is Vicky Brooks.  Mrs. Brooks worked as a member of our cafeteria staff since December 2018 and she leads that awesome team with new Assistant Director Kim Rawson.  Mrs. Rawson is one of us already after working at Latta previously.  We are extremely happy that she has returned to our Latta family.

Welcome to all our new students and staff who each prove that change is good when synergy – energy working in the same direction – is in motion!  …….. GO Panthers!
